Co v Edinburghu nevynechat, jak se tam dostat, jakého vybrat průvodce a kde se najíst? Dnešní článek patří do minisérie "Quick Guides" a jsou tu všechny informace a tipy, které se nám za víkend v tomto krásném skotském městě podařilo nasbírat. Snad se budou hodit :).
What not to miss in Edinburgh, how to get there, which guide to choose and where to eat? Today's post is a part of the "Quick Guides" mini-series and it's all about writing down information and tips we collected over the weekend in the Scottish capital. Hope they come in handy :).
Transport
Do Edinburghu se dostanete autobusem, vlakem i letadlem, takže záleží na vás, odkud zrovna míříte. My jsme využili autobus z Glasgow, kterým trvá cesta přibližně hodinu a zpátky do Liverpoolu jsme jeli vlakem (na delší cesty po Anglii je opravdu časově výhodnější vlak, i když je dražší, ale čím víc dopředu jízdenky koupíte, tím lepší bude cena). Osm kilometrů od Edinburghu je také letiště, takže pokud do Skotska letíte, cesta do centra autobusem (Airlink 100) nebo autem trvá necelou půlhodinku.
Ve městě funguje veřejná doprava, centrum je ale celkem snadné obejít pěšky, takže není nutné platit za autobus nebo tramvaj.
Edinburgh is accessible by bus, train and plane so it really depends on where you’re going from. We took the bus from Glasgow from where it takes an hour to get to Edinburgh and we took the train to get back to Liverpool (it’s better to take a train instead of a bus on the longer journeys although it is more expensive - to save as much as possible on train tickets, buy them as soon as you can). The airport is only 8km away from Edinburgh so it takes only half an hour to get to the city centre from there (take the Airlink 100 bus).
When in the city you can use public transport but the centre is quite compact and it’s easy to walk everywhere so I wouldn’t say it’s necessary to pay for a bus or a tram.

Využili jsme průvodce od Insight Travel Guides: Great Breaks, který jsme měli stažený v mobilu, a kombinovali ho se zajímavostmi a tipy na skvělá místa načtenými z blogů. K tomu jsme přidali ještě TripAdvisor, který má skvělou možnost stáhnout si danou oblast pro offline přístup a umožní vám tak číst recenze na restaurace, památky nebo hotely, i když zrovna nemáte připojení k internetu.
Our guide of choice was an e-book from Insight Travel Guides: Great Breaks. Apart from that we’ve done quite a lot of research online and collected some tips from various blogs and websites. All this combined with TripAdvisor app which has an amazing feature - you can download the data for a certain area and then when you’re not online you can browse recommendations and reviews of hotels, sights or restaurants.
What not to miss?
Edinburgh Castle
Dominanta celého Edinburghu, majestátně se tyčící nad všemi ostatními budovami. Nahlédnout za první bránu můžete zadarmo, dál už se platí vstupné £15 (cca 500,- Kč).
The most famous sight dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh. You can get behind the first gate for free to get a feel of what the complex looks like, to enter the castle you’ll have to pay £15 for the admission.
The Royal Mile
Vede od Edinburgh Castle až k Holyrood House a propojuje tak celé historické centrum. Pokud ji chcete vidět bez zástupu turistů, vraťte se sem později večer, když už je většina obchodů zavřených.
It stretches all the way from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood House and therefore connects the historical centre. If you want to enjoy the atmosphere of this street without the crowds, come back later in the evening when the shops are closed.
Scottish National Gallery
Spolu se Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art tvoří ostrůvek umění v centru města. Většina expozic je zdarma.
Together with Scottish National Gallery of Modern art these two buildings create an “art island” in the city centre. The entry to most of the exhibitions is free.
Princess Street Gardens
Kde jinde si dát poobědovou siestu než v parku? Navíc, když je odtud bezkonkurenční výhled na hrad.
Where else to relax after lunch than in a beautiful park? Plus you can see the castle from here as well.
Scott Monument
Dalším místem s vyhlídkou na hrad a historické centrum je památník spisovatele Sira Waltera Scota. Je to největší památník věnovaný spisovateli na světě, a po zdolání cca 250 schodů se můžete kochat Edinburghem z vyhlídky na jeho vrcholu. Vstupné je £5 (cca 160,-).
Another place with a view of the castle and the historical centre is the Scott Monument, which is the largest monument to a writer in the world. You can admire the view from the top after climbing approx. 250 stairs. The admission is £5.
National Museum of Scotland
Jedno z nejlepších muzeí, které jsem kdy navštívila. Vstup je zdarma, takže žádné výmluvy, muzeum je zajímavé jak expozicemi, tak interiérem.
One of the best museums I’ve ever been to. The entry is free so no excuses, both the interior and the exhibitions are really interesting.
Dean Village
Delší procházkou z centra se dostanete do Dean Village, kde to vypadá jako v rakouské vesničce, ne jako v centru hlavního města.
It’s a 15 - 20 minute walk from the city centre and Dean Village a really cute area with houses that will make you immediately feel like you’re in Austria.
Calton Hill
Nejznámější výhled na Edinburgh objevíte na Calton Hillu. Není to takový výšlap, jak se může zdát na fotkách, takže se nebojte se na něj vydat.
The most famous view of Edinburgh can be seen from Calton Hill. It’s not as high as it might seem so don’t be discouraged and take the stairs to the top.
Gefriars Bobby Memorial
Socha pejska, který hlídal hrob svého páníčka, dokud sám neumřel, je jednou z nejznámějších v celém Edinburghu. Můžete mu pro štěstí pohladit nos :).
A statue of a dog who guarded his owner’s grave until he died as well, is one of the most famous statues in Edinburgh. You can rub his nose for good luck :).
Palace of Holyroodhouse
Holyroodhouse je oficiální skotskou rezidencí královny. Vstupné dovnitř je £12.00 (cca 400,-) a najdete ho na konci The Royal Mile.
Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. It’s situated at the end of The Royal Mile and the admission fee is £12.00.
The Real Mary King’s Close
Prohlídka domů že 17. století, které jsou kvůli nové výstavbě pod zemí (celý příběh si přečtěte tady), je pro mě absolutní jednička na seznamu prohlídek, na které byste v Edinburghu měli jít.
A tour of the 17th century houses that are underground now because new buildings needed to be built on top of them (read more about the story here) should definitely be on your list of tours you have to go on while in Edinburgh.
Elephant House
Kavárna, ve které J. K. Rowling psala první díly Harryho Pottera nesmí uniknout žádnému fanouškovi. Nakoukněte dovnitř cestou do národního muzea nebo k soše psa Bobbyho.
No true Harry Potter fan should miss the coffee place where J. K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter books. Have a look inside while you’re on your way to the Scottish National Museum or Gefriars Bobby Memorial.
Victoria Street and Candlemaker Row
Ještě jedna zmínka o Harry Potterovi - Victoria Street údajně inspirovala podobu Příčné ulice, sousední Candlemaker Row je také jako vystřižená z kouzelnického světa.
And one more Harry Potter themed stop are these two streets - a real life Diagon Alley, however we think the Candlemaker Row looks like it’s straight from the world of magic as well.
Arthur’s Seat
Pokud máte dvě až tři hodiny času a vyhovující obutí, vyražte na Arthur’s Seat, pravděpodobně nejznámější výšlap v blízkém okolí Edinburghu.
If you have two to three hours to spare and some decent shoes, go on a hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat. This is probably the most famous hike in this area so don’t miss it.
Where to eat?
BRGR
Máte chuť na dobrý burger, chcete ho rychle a nechcete za něj dát zbytečně moc peněz? BRGR je ideální volba! Je to něco mezi restaurací a rychlým občerstvením, nám se líbila hlavně jednoduchost a kvalita jídla, pro milkshake jsme se vraceli ještě druhý den :).
If you’re in the mood for a good burger, you want it fast and for a reasonable price, BRGR is the place to go! It’s a mix between a restaurant and a fast food with tasty burgers, simple interior and we came back for their milkshake the next day as well :).
The Conan Doyle
Klasický pub pojmenovaný po autorovi Sherlocka Holmese, který se narodil nedaleko. Na posezení u cideru nebo u piva po celém dni chození po památkách je to rozhodně dobré místo.
A typical English pub named after the author of Sherlock Holmes, who was born in the area. It’s a great place to sit with a pint of cider or beer after a long day of walking around the city and exploring.
Where to stay?
Přes Booking.com jsme našli ubytování nedaleko centra (15 minut pěšky) - McDonald Road Residence, za £108 (cca 3500,-) pro dvě osoby na dva dny, což byla v porovnání s ostatními hotely cena víc než slušná. Protože je to "campus accomodation", nejsem si jistá, jestli se tu dá ubytovat jindy, než v létě, kdy ve městě nejsou studenti. Každopádně jsme s pokojem byli spokojení. Ve většině jsou v nabídce malé pokoje s vlastní koupelnou, ke kterým patří i přístup do kuchyně, takže ideální, pokud chcete ušetřit a připravovat si snídaně/svačiny/večeře sami. Přímo naproti hotelu je supermarket.
We found our accomodation through Booking.com, near the city centre (15-minute walk) - McDonald Road Residence, where we paid £108 for two nights/two people, which was more than reasonable. Since it's "campus accommodation", I'm not quite sure whether it's possible to book it when it's not summer and there are students in town, but we were really happy with it. They mostly offer small rooms with a bathroom and shared kitchen, which is ideal if you want to save some money and prepare the breakfast/snacks/dinner yourself. There's also a supermarket right in front of the hotel.
